If you are having a hospital birth (or even if you're not,
but are concerned about beign transfered from home), it's a good
idea to pack some essentials "just in case". I usually
packed my emergency bag at about 36 weeks, containing the following:-
For Baby:
- First-stage, rear-facing car seat with newborn head-hugger.
- Small, soft comforter or shawl
- Half a dozen diapers, suitable for a newborn, or 3 wraps
and 6 diapers.
- 3 newborn size cotton sleepsuits
- 3 newborn size onesies, with snaps under the crotch.
- A cardigan/jacket
- Hat (Winter)
- Washcloth for the baby's use.
- Wipes, washcloths or cotton wool, suitable for diaper changing
a newborn.
- Diaper bag/rucksack with fold-up changing mat
For You:
- Disposable or old cotton underpants
- Maternity or overnight sanitary pads
- Breast-pads
- Tylenol tablets (for after-pains)
- Nursing bra
- Front opening/nursing nightgown
- Housecoat/dressing-gown
- Slipper-socks
- Loose clothing, preferably with adjustable, elasticated waist
(you will probably be quite big still, even after the birth).
- Address book
- Cash
- Maternity/birth notes (if you carry them yourself)
